Perfect Match

They were a perfect match
P’s and Q’s in a cabbage patch
She spoke so slow, he spoke so fast
Everyone said it wouldn’t last
But time, you know, is relative

They met at a baseball game
A quiet park, little chance of rain
It was the only thing she found didn’t end too soon
He was as bored as a lazy afternoon
Pitching duels aren’t for everyone

When the ball popped foul she moved slowly in
Anticipation for her was a simple thing
He fainted at the fright,
But when he came to it was love at first sight
For her it took longer

How can we know what we we’re looking for
How can we ever ever be sure
How can we know what’s just out the door
Until we're there

Her smile was slow but lasted all day
When she was with him that way
And his laugh would bubble like a tumbling stream
Always changing and gaining steam
She said she loved that

Her sentences were like sighs
Best measured in dog years and long goodbyes
It all came out in a gush to his ears
Time’s surely bigger than it appears
And listening is where love begins

How can we know what we we’re looking for
How can we ever ever be sure
How can we know what’s just out the door
Until we're there

These days so many live in fear
Especially of those who don’t live around here
And that’s true though we’re mostly all the same
Not counting our funny clothes and funny names

She took a chance, he did too
It probably worked because they wanted it to
Everybody starts out strangers
And while we are we all live in danger
Of what we don’t know

They were a perfect match
P’s and Q’s in a cabbage patch
She spoke so slow, he spoke so fast
Everyone said it wouldn’t last
But of course it did…
